As the US House of Representatives voted to defund Planned Parenthood yesterday, I think there is no better time to share this zine I made recently. This zine is largely about choice, one that is rarely black and white. A choice that without safe spaces like Planned Parenthood, would not be available to most women. There is nothing more weighty and sacred than the decision to become a parent and bring a child into the world, which is why I strongly believe in upholding an individual’s freedom to be trusted with and empowered in that decision. #ISTANDWITHPLANNEDPARENTHOOD because however overwhelmed, conflicted or excited I am by my own personal reproductive options, it is everything to me to possess them. My body, my choice.

My book, Sonya's Chickens is now available!!!
"Sonya is bereft when a fox takes one of the three chickens she’s cared for like a mother, but her papa comforts her with the idea that the fox is also trying to feed his family. Her family acknowledges Sonya’s grief with a small ceremony, and the child and her chickens move on. There’s an old-fashioned feel to this simple story and its timeless illustrations, created with watercolor, collage, and colored pencil and reminiscent of Goodnight Moon in mood, design, and palette. Inside, Sonya’s house is cozy and dark. In contrast, the world outside shines white, as background to text, with vignettes or a frame or portion of the opposite image spilling across the gutter. A warm scene of Sonya’s mixed-race family having dinner together is mirrored later on by one with the fox curled up with its kits, each family shown opposite a page with an egg-shaped text frame. Both words and illustrations emphasize comfort and the security a family can provide. But this is also a realistic description of chicken care, including preparing, cleaning, and repairing the coop, feeding the chickens, and making sure they have water and fresh straw—even finding eggs. A reassuring story about death in the natural world, thoughtfully designed and illustrated. " —Kirkus Reviews
You can purchase Sonya's Chickens at your local bookstore, and also online at Powell's, The Strand, and Amazon.
I am also very excited to announce that Sonya's Chickens was selected to be in the Society of Illustrators New York's annual Original Art Exhibition! More info HERE.
My launch at my local bookstore, Village Books in Bellingham, WA was a booming success! I had a wonderful time. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to support me! Village Books sold out of my book very quickly, but more are on their way! And I'll be signing the whole lot when they arrive. My event at Green Bean Books in Portland, Oregon unfortunately had to be cancelled due to a medical emergency, but I WILL be rescheduling for sometime this fall! The next event I have scheduled is at Longfellow Books in Portand, Maine on September 17th at 6pm!
Just for fun, my sketch of the cover, below.
First and foremost, I would like to thank you for your incredible support. I can’t begin to express how humbled I feel by the constant influx of enthusiasm I receive on a daily basis about my work and my shop.
The time has come for me to implement some changes in my shop. The volume of orders I receive has reached a point to which it is becoming overwhelming to balance all of the work associated with operating a shop along with being a freelance illustrator.
I feel honored to receive the amount of demand and excitement for and about my products that I do. And I do sincerely want to provide people with ways to purchase and enjoy the things that I make. That being said, my primary goal as a working artist is to make work. Yes for the enjoyment of the public, but largely to feed my own creative fire and achieve my own goals. And as my shop grows, time to write new stories and create new paintings and make new sculptures is harder to come by. I trust that you will understand that this change is ultimately an investment in my overall well being and success as an artist!
So, the news is this:
It will be open from November 1st - December 15th 2015, And again from April 1st - May 15th 2016.
Structuring my shop like this will hopefully mean I will have more time in between to come up with exciting new inventory as well as focus on other projects. It will also enable me to be fully focused on processing and shipping orders when my shop is open.
AS FOR RIGHT NOW, I am closing my shop on JUNE 1st 2015, and trying to sell out of as much inventory as possible. ENTER COUPON CODE “SPRING2015” to receive 20% OFF on any order!!!
I WILL still be available for wholesale orders between shop openings.
I also can always be contacted about purchasing original paintings and one of a kind sculptures. For those inquiries please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Also, keep your eye out for MORE of my work in the Taproot magazine shop! (Details TBA!)
Thank you so much for your support, patience and understanding. Be sure to stay up to date on any current projects here, as well as on my tumblr(s), Twitter, and Facebook page. I will also begin sending out an email newsletter whenever I have news about upcoming events, shows, and projects. If you're interested in receiving that, please subscribe at the bottom of the righthand sidebar.
My little comic Fairy Ring is in the latest issue of Emergence newspaper, published here in Bellingham by Neoglyphic Media! Check their website to order online or find a stockiest near you! You can also find my friend Ben Nadler's work within the pages, amongst so many other wonderful artists. See the full comic HERE.
I was excited last week to receive my advance copy of my book, Sonya's Chickens which is coming out August 11th, 2015! Working with Tundra Books on Sonya has been such a wonderful experience, August can't come soon enough! I will have lots more info soon about events relating to the release of the book.
Although you CAN pre-order Sonya's Chickens on Amazon I would encourage you to be in touch with your local bookstore instead about pre-ordering, or add it to your wishlist on Powells.com!
